Student days again
Saturday 17th October

It's 10:15am and I'm siting in the car, parked near the Royal Northern College of Music. I've arranged to meet Mike, someone I knew at university. I'm really looking forward to going out today.

At 10:20 I get out of the car and walk over to the park near Manchester Met students union. In the distance I see Mike on Oxford Road walking towards me.

Me: "Hi!"
Mike: "Hi. How are you?"
Me: "Good thanks. You're early."
Mike: "Yes. I didn't know how long it would take to walk from the hotel. Where are we going?"
Me: "I don't know. Go around town?"
Mike: "Last time we did the art gallery and Urbis. Have we done all the tourist places in Manchester? Maybe we could go to the tourist information and see what's on."
Me: "Yeah, sure."
We talk about what we've been doing lately. Mike has been travelling to America and is working in Wolverhampton. We get on well.

Me: "How was the gig last night?"
Mike: "It was really good. It was very loud, I've still got ringing in my ears. Super Fury Animals are known as one of the loudest bands. You said you've seen them haven't you?"
Me: "Super Furry Animals, or was ot Supergrass?"
Mike: "You can't remember!?"
Me: "I don't know. I was invited to it. It was one or the other. Supergrass I think."
We laugh.

We talk a while about uni days.
Me: "We were getting really concerned at one point because you were drinking so much."
Mike: "Were you?!"
Me: "Yes. We wondered if you'd survive it. When you did A to Z of drinks that night."
Mike laughs.
Mike: "That was second year. When I looked at my notes from second year my hand was shaking while writing from all the drink! I don't drink much now though. I had 4 pints the other day and I was getting drunk."

We reach the tourist information in St. Peter's Square. We look around. A lot of the leaflets here are about things outside of the city like Bolton, Liverpool, Chester.
Me: "Look at this. Gamecon 09. A computer games convention. Hey! The people get dressed up as the game characters!"
Mike: "We're not going there."
Me: "It seems quite cool."
We laugh.
Mike: "What about this. The Museum of Science and Industry."
Me: "Ok. We'll go there. It's not far."

We walk along Peter Street towards the Museum of Science and Industry. We turn left onto Deansgate.
Mike: "We could go to the tower."
Me: "The Hilton Hotel one."
Mike: "Yes. Is that a glass floor."
Me: "Yes. There's an overhang at the bar level."
We go inside the Hilton building.
Me to receptionist: "Is the bar open?"
Receptionist guy: "Sorry. It opens at 4 for high tea and we're fully booked. The bar is open at 7."
Me to Mike: "It's not open."

Now we're on the street and discussing nights out. Mike is saying how he doesn't get annoyed or in fights with people. If someone is being an idiot he just says "Tosser" and moves on. He wants to have fun, not get involved with people who mess about. It's a good approach.

We go to the Museum of Science and Industry. We find building 2 and 3 about historic Manchester. Then building 4 with the big trains. And building 5 with the aeroplanes which is very good.
Me: "This is great."
Mike: "I like the helicopters with 2 rotors."

We go for lunch at a nearby pub on the same street as the Museum of Science and Industry.

Throughout the afternoon we go around bars. Then a Chinese restaurant which serves authentic Chinese food.

We have a nice meal and go home. It's a light hearted fun day out.
