Signing up to Facebook
Monday 14th September

I signed up to Facebook. I've been totally against online social networking and similar activities. However it recently reached a point where I'm dropping leaflets promoting my book in the real world and I can't reach people.

A lot of people aren't accessible or findable through real world methods. They don't read newspapers, leaflets, posters or go into bookshops. The only thing they respond to are things done through facebook.

I stand in a deserted street in my neighbourhood on a warm evening. No-one;s watching the sunset, playing with friends. They're in their houses on social networking or watching TV.

So I've now got a facebook account, uploaded a picture, put some details about my profile. It even gave a list of names of people who I might know - I don't know how it managed that but it did. There was quite a number of ladies I've met over the past year of approaching and chatting to random people, they must have been looking for me. There were some guys I met in bars. Also some school and university friends.

Ok. So I'm on Facebook. Finding people to add as friends.

I'm just clicking on anything now. I can't find any instructions.

What's the point of all this fiddling around online. It's like work. There's none of the fun of actually being with friends.

Maybe I'll find it of some interest if I use it a bit more. Is there something I'm missing out on? Or is this it to social networking?

I still haven't worked out how to promote my book through it. Do I just add friends and hope they see it and buy it if I put a link to it?

Really I could do with some whiz kid who can do all this for me or something.
