South American in Waterstones
Saturday 10th January

It's 11:30am. I meet up with Phil who I used to go out with in 2005 to bars for the 5pm after work crowd in the city. We went out recently on the 19th December 2008 to Met bar. It was the night there were lots of nurses, teachers etc. people with social skills.

Today me and Phil go for something to eat, discuss business, then go around a few stores in the city. Now we're in Waterstones bookshop in Manchester Arndale shopping centre. Me and Phil are still discussing business and I notice a lady looking at books who is smartly dressed and attractive.
Phil notices me noticing her.
Phil: "Approach if you want."
She's right near us and I say to her.
Me: "Can I get your opinion on something. What's a good present to get someone on Valentines day?"
Her: "I don't know." she says giggling.
Me: "My friend is starting a business and he's wondering what to sell."
Her: "Perfume?"
Me: "Are you a student?"
Her: "Yes. I'm studying make up artistry." she says smiling and putting a make-up book back on the shelf.
Me: "Are you at Manchester Met?"
Her: "Yes."
Me: "Where are you from?"
Her: "Peru in South America. Are you a student?"
Me: "No, I used to go to Manchester University though."
Her: "What did you study?"
Me: "Physics with Business and Management."
Her: "That's interesting." she says as if it sounds like an interesting course.
Me: "There were only four people on the course then they dropped out or changed. I think I was the only one to graduate on that course in that year."
Her: "Really. Are you from Manchester?"
Me: "Yes."
Her: "What are you doing now?"
Me: "I'm out with my friend Phil."
I look around for Phil but he's disappeared.
Me: "He's around somewhere. We should meet up for a coffee."
Her: "Ok."
Me: "What's your number?"
I take out a pen.
Me: "Do you have any paper?"
She looks in her purse, then I find the Subway vouchers someone gave me earlier and I pass one to her.
She writes down her number.
Me: "See you later."
Her: "Bye." she says smiling.

I walk towards the store exit wondering where Phil has got to and find him around a corner, having left me on my own to chat her up – which was nice of him.
Phil: "You got her number." he said as if expecting me to have got it.
Me: "Yes. I say showing him the number which I still have in my hand."
Phil: "You should have taken it on your phone and called it to check if it's real."
Me: "It doesn't matter. If it isn't then I'll meet someone else."
Phil: "You could have gone on an instant date."
Me: "She did sort of ask that, but I'm out with you."
Phil: "I could have gone home, we're going in a bit anyway."
Me: "No I wouldn't do that. Although an instant date is better, then it's easy to arrange to meet again because you already know them."
Phil: "Exactly."
Me: "But I'm not going to if I'm out with a friend."
Phil: "Ok. Make sure you call her while the number is still hot."
